Website Introduces Free Safety Training Solution

SAN ANTONIO -- February 1, 2005:
UTSA’s Institute for Economic Development Human Capital Program launched AllSafeMart.org, a free training program for managers and employees in developing and keeping a safe working environment at retail grocery and convenience stores across America.

The Human Capital Program created All Safe Mart TM to promote the use of safety and health programs for small business owners. Topics covered include general safety, ergonomic guidelines and hazards, and workplace violence information.

The training is fast, as it ranges from 10 to 20 minutes. The five stand-alone training modules in the program are fast and flexible, ranging from 10-20 minutes and there is no order in which they must be completed. Most of all, anyone can use the program since it targets a workforce audience with a broad range of educational backgrounds. By the end of each unit, the user will have a clear understanding of what is required and how a sound safety and health program benefits everyone.

The training kit comes complete with a copy of all the instructional materials, special job aids and two CDs: one for instructors and another CD which allows up to two learners to view the short lessons on a computer without having to connect to the Internet. The online version of the training can keep track of an individual’s progress with the training and includes a special area for users to share their best advice for reducing work-related injuries and illnesses. The web version also provides a safety and health plan template where managers can print out a customized plan for their stores.

The Institute was able to develop the online training through a $197,422 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) OSHA awarded the Human Capital Program in September 2003 the Susan Harwood Training grant to develop the industry specific training materials. Now that the materials have been reviewed and approved by OSHA, and they will be available for two years, free of charge.
